Which dial should you choose?
The 1908’s dials are deliberately classical: a small seconds subdial, applied Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, and slender leaf-shaped hands. The white dial with a subtle grain looks traditional and very dressy; the black dial is bolder and a little more contemporary. The platinum 52506’s ice-blue dial with a rice-grain guilloché pattern is the most elaborate.
How does the 1908 wear?
Beautifully, if you want a dress watch. The 39 mm diameter sounds large for a dress piece, but the thin case, domed bezel and curved lugs sit close to the wrist. It is light for a gold Rolex because of the strap. What should you check on a pre-owned 1908?
- Strap and clasp. The leather strap is a wear item. Check its condition, and whether the original folding clasp is included.
- Case scratches. Polished gold marks easily. Light hairlines are normal; dents are not.
- Display caseback. It should be clean and free of scratches or chips.
- Box and papers. Because the model is new, most pre-owned examples should come with the full set and a warranty card that still has years of Rolex coverage remaining.
