Buying a watch worth thousands of dollars without seeing it first can feel like a leap of faith. In practice, buying a Rolex online from a reputable US dealer is routine, safe and often simpler than buying in a store, provided you know what to expect at each step. Here is the process, step by step, from checkout to wearing it.
Before you order
- Confirm the exact watch. The listing should show the actual watch with a stock number, and state its reference, condition and what is included.
- Ask questions. A good dealer will send extra photos or measurements and explain anything in the listing. Our number is on every page.
- Read the warranty and return terms. Know the length of each and who pays return shipping.
- Consider a hold. If you need a day to decide, ask whether the dealer can reserve the watch. We offer a 24-hour hold.
Our guide to buying a pre-owned Rolex covers choosing the watch itself.
Paying for your watch
The payment step is where most online watch fraud happens, so it deserves a moment of care. Always pay with a method that leaves a clear record and that you can dispute if something goes wrong, from a business whose name and contact details you can verify. Be wary of any seller who pushes for untraceable payment methods or asks you to pay a different entity from the one you are buying from.
Sales tax
Tax is the cost most often left out of price comparisons. Since 2018, US states can require online sellers to collect sales tax based on where the item is shipped. In most states, sales tax is added at checkout for your shipping address, just as it would be in a local store. A few states have no general sales tax. On an expensive watch the amount is significant, so include it when comparing prices.
Shipping and insurance
A reputable dealer ships every watch:
- Fully insured for its value while in transit.
- Signature required, so it cannot be left at the door.
- With tracking, so you know when to expect it.
Our shipping is free and insured to all 50 states, and in-stock watches ship within one business day of cleared payment. Details are on our shipping page.
Delivery day
- Be there to sign. If you will be away, ask the carrier to hold the package at a staffed location.
- Inspect the outer packaging before signing. If it is damaged, note it with the carrier.
- Open it carefully, ideally on video, and keep all packaging until your return window closes.
What to check when the watch arrives
- Reference and serial. Confirm they match the listing and any papers.
- Included items. Box, papers, booklets, links and certificate as listed.
- Condition. Compare the watch with the listing photos in daylight.
- Function. Wind it, set the time and date, and wear it for a day or two. A healthy automatic keeps good time and runs overnight.
- Fit. If the bracelet needs sizing, use the removed links or ask a local watchmaker to do it.
How long does the whole process take?
With a domestic dealer, a typical timeline looks like this: you place the order, payment clears (immediately for some methods, a day or two for others), the watch ships within one business day, and it arrives one to two business days later. From deciding to wearing the watch is often less than a week. Bracelet sizing, if you ask the dealer to do it before shipping, can add a day.
Overseas purchases, by contrast, can take weeks once customs clearance is involved, which is one more reason domestic buyers usually prefer a US dealer.
Keeping your records
Keep a simple file for your watch: the invoice, our certificate, the warranty terms, the Rolex papers if included, and clear photos of the watch showing the dial, caseback and reference. You will need them for insurance, for any warranty claim, and one day for resale. Store copies digitally as well as on paper.
Returns
If something is not right, contact the dealer promptly, and always before sending anything back. Most dealers require the watch to be returned in the condition it arrived with everything included, and return shipping must be insured for the full value. Our return window is 10 days from delivery; call +1 971 433 9218 to start a return. The details are on our returns page.
Insuring your watch
This is the step many buyers forget until something goes wrong. Your watch is insured in transit by the dealer. Once it is delivered, it is yours to insure. Options include:
- A rider on your homeowner’s or renter’s policy, usually requiring an invoice or appraisal.
- A separate jewelry and watch policy from a specialist insurer, often covering loss, theft and damage worldwide.
Keep your invoice, certificate and photos of the watch together, including the reference and serial, for any claim.
Why buying from a US dealer is simpler
Domestic buying keeps every part of the transaction inside one legal and tax system, with one set of consumer protections. Buying domestically avoids import duties, customs delays and the complications of cross-border returns and warranties. Red flags when buying online

- Prices far below comparable listings.
- No phone number, or a seller who will only communicate by message.
- Pressure to pay immediately or outside a normal checkout.
- Vague answers about authentication, warranty or returns.
